Gender Creative Kids

Made by Raffi

I am reaching out to journalists, educators and parents. After reading and tweeting several stories on bullying, autism and gender roles, I was guided to your site and thought you would be interested in my story. My children’s book Made by Raffi is out and I am very proud of the attention and reviews, but mostly the conversation regarding “embracing our differences” that it is generating.
News: Made By Raffi is shortlisted for the Little Rebel Children’s Book Award!

Inspired by a true-life incident, Made By Raffi is the story of a little boy who likes to knit and sew — at first he is teased for his hobby, but in the end he becomes a hero to his class. The book is published in seven languages and distributed in ten countries so far by UK publishers Frances Lincoln under their diversity imprint, Janetta Otter-Barry Books. Award-winning artist Margaret Chamberlain is the illustrator.

I wrote the book to support young boys and girls who are perceived as “different” because of their appearance or hobbies. It is a funny colorful book with a serious message and will interest those who care about promoting diversity and embracing our differences, as well as all children seeking to fit in.

Also exciting news! – is that composers Amanda McBroom (Bette Midler’s “The Rose”) and Michele Brourman (The Land Before Time) wrote a song “Different” to be attached to the book. We just finished the final mix and will release it this month.

Oprah’s guru Geneen Roth [Women Food and God] “I wanted you all to know about this one…although he is bullied, he really does stay true to himself– and it all comes around in the end. So touching.

I was recently forwarded this email from a man in Istanbul: “Today I enjoyed to preorder your beautiful and meaningful children book for my cousin. Especially here in Turkey we need to learn respect to the one who is different than us. Thanks for your effort to make the world a better place to live. Best regards, ”

A donor has given 75 books to the Archdiocese of New York Catholic schools for all of their libraries. I am available for interviews or background conversation on the topic or I can write a blog post to keep the conversation going.

Below are some early trade reviews.
